Séamus Hughes

Ceist:

88 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine when he will authorise a replacement fisheries inspector for Bangor District North Western Regional Fisheries as the post has been vacant for four years, as fishery protection services have been withdrawn from the area having regard to Health and Safety legislation and the recommendations of the Ballycotton Inquiry.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 87 and 88 together.

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department recently approved the appointment of an Assistant Inspector on a contract basis in the Bangor District of the North Western Fisheries Region. The post has been advertised within the Fisheries Service by the North Western Regional Fisheries Board.

I am satisfied that this appointment will greatly strengthen the protection service in the Bangor District which has not been withdrawn to date. The filling of the Inspector post is being looked at separately.
