Vol. 431 No. 7

Written Answers - Asbestos Removal.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

60 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if, in regard to the removal of asbestos from schools or hospitals, an Environmental Impact Assessment is required and carried out prior to such removal.

The types of projects to which Environmental Impact Assessment applies are specified in the First Schedule to the European Communities (Environmental Impact Assessment) Regulations, 1989. Removal of asbestos is not included in that Schedule. I understand, however, that the European Communities (Protection of Workers) (Exposure to Asbestos) Regulations, 1989 for which the Minister for Enterprise and Employment is responsible, contain provisions in relation to the removal of asbestos from buildings.
