Vol. 431 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Psychological Service.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

146 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the facilities and services provided by the school psychological service.

The psychological service of my Department provides a service to post-primary schools throughout the country, with the exception of schools run by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee which employs its own psychologists. It also is involved in the development of a pilot psychological service to primary schools in two designated areas, viz. Tallaght-Clondalkin and South Tipperary.

The members of the service are available to carry out assessments and give advice on pupils who may be referred to them by individual schools, with the consent of parents. They also provide guidance and counselling in schools, liaise with the health and social services in their school areas and advise on the provision of remedial education for pupils who require such a service.

Other activities of the psychological service include the organisation of a oneyear course in remedial education for post-primary teachers and curriculum development work in the area of health education.
