I am aware that the WHO has recently expressed concern about the current level of tuberculosis. However, the great majority of today's tuberculosis cases and more than 95 per cent of TB deaths, are in the developing world. I would add that my Department's policy in relation to tuberculosis is being examined by a working party under the chairmanship of the chief medical officer of my Department. The group is examining all aspects of tuberculosis including vaccination, notification, surveillance, treatment and contact tracing procedures. Their aim will be to ensure that there is an appropriate framework to deal with all problems associated with tuberculosis.
