Vol. 431 No. 8

Written Answers. - Health Care for AIDS or HIV Patients.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

33 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that all health boards are providing free and comprehensive health care services to all patients with AIDS or the HIV virus; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No evidence has emerged that persons who are infected with HIV/AIDS are not receiving appropriate health care. Services are being provided in each area as part of the National AIDS Strategy which was adopted in 1992. I am continuing to develop this Strategy to ensure that it is responsive to our needs and in particualar to those persons who require care and management for their illness. Towards this end, a total of £4.4 million is being made available to continue services and programmes commenced last year and to allow certain service developments to take place. This £4.4 million is of course, additional to the funding provided for the mainstream health services.
