Ceist:

229 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education the reason she did not attend or was not represented at the recent Dyslexia Conference at UCD on 15 May 1993.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 50, 63, 64, 67, 82 and 229 together.

While I very much appreciated the invitation to perform the official opening of the recent Dyslexia Conference, I was unfortunately unable to attend due to a number of prior engagements on the day in question.

The invitation to open the Conference was directed to me personally as Minister for Education. As far as I am aware the organisers did not suggest or request that an official of my Department substitute for me in my absence.

I would like to assure the Deputies, however, that I am very aware of the difficulties experienced by children with a specific learning disability, sometimes referred to as dyslexia, and I will be giving full consideration to the recommendations of the Special Education Review Committee in this regard.
