Vol. 432 No. 6

Written Answers. - Peat Fired Generating Station.

Charles Flanagan

Ceist:

178 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications his views on a recent ESRI report recommending inter alia that no money be expended on proposals for a new peat fired electricity generating station; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the recommendations of the ESRI report referred to by the Deputy. However, the proposal to construct the new peat station is in line with the recommendations of the Culliton report as the objective of the proposed station is to reduce diseconomies in peat generation, thereby reducing the cost of electricity to the consumer as well as underpinning employment and import substitution. The Government is committed to the construction of this station provided that it is found to be feasible.
