Vol. 433 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Restrictions on Sale of Land.

Peadar Clohessy

Ceist:

26 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will re-introduce the 25 per cent to enable farmers to sell some of their lands without suffering a reduction in their milk quota; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

75 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on the position whereby a milk quota cannot be transferred on a recently purchased farm within the same creamery area as the existing farm, particularly in view of the fact that the existing farm had to be sold to part finance the new property and the young farmer involved is endeavouring to make a full-time living on the land; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 26 and 75 together.

The new Council Regulation governing the EC milk quota system until the year 2000 gives member states an option of providing for the breaking of the land-quota link with a view to improving the structure of milk production at the level of the holding. I intend to introduce provisions providing for such flexibility in Ireland and the necessary national regulations are at an advanced stage of drafting.
