Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - Navan (Meath) Taxi Rank.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

73 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment if he will sanction the provision of a taxi rank in Navan, County Meath; if the study on the introduction of a public hire vehicle service for this area has been completed; and if so, when the results of the study will be known.

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations provide for the operation of taxis in 16 cities and towns which are designated as taximeter areas. Taxi ranks can only be provided in taximeter areas in accordance with by-laws made by the Garda Commissioner. Navan is not a taximeter area and taxis are accordingly not licensed to operate there.

I am now finalising consideration of the issues raised in the comprehensive review of the law applying to the operation of small public service vehicles generally with a view to taking early decisions in relation to a range of issues including the introduction of taxi services to new areas such as Navan.
