Vol. 433 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Waterford Harbour Development.

Brendan Kenneally

Ceist:

84 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has for the development of the harbour at Dunmore East, County Waterford for both fishing vessels and pleasure craft, in view of the congestion which is occurring there and which is becoming a problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Measures were taken by the Department during 1992 to alleviate the congestion of vessels at Dunmore East Fishery Harbour Centre; a number of pontoons were installed at the West Wharf of the harbour. A more longterm solution to the berthage difficulties would, however, involve major development works. The Department is currently implementing the final year of its Fishery Harbour Development Programme for the period 1989 to 1993. There is no provision under this programme for major development works at the harbour and no finance is currently allocated.

An ambitious development plan has been presented to the Department by a locally formed development group and the Department is presently assessing this proposal in the context of future development programmes. The Department is currently drawing up a new Fishery Harbour Development Plan to cover the period 1994 to 1997 and Dunmore East will be considered in this context. Pending finalisation of the Plan and clarification of funding, I am not in a position to say what development works will be sanctioned.
