Vol. 433 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sheep Quotas.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total value of surplus sheep quotas now available for redistribution; when such redistribution will take place; the categories of flock owners that will be eligible for consideration for award of such surplus; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The ewe premium rights available for distribution include (i) a national reserve which will initially amount to about 65,000 rights, (ii) a special reserve for the disadvantaged areas which will amount to about 35,000 rights and (iii) rights surrendered by producers who ceased production in 1991 without having passed on their holdings estimated at 90,000 rights. Moreover where a producer transfers his/her rights without transfer of the holdings, 15 per cent of the rights involved will be surrendered to the national reserve and these will also be available for distribution.

I expect to be in a position to announce, in the near future, details of the priority categories eligible to benefit from available ewe premium rights and of application procedures.
