Vol. 433 No. 6

Written Answers. - Portumna (Galway) School.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

156 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Education if she intends providing or paying for accommodation for September 1993 for pupils from Portumna national school, County Galway, where a number of classrooms have been condemned by Galway County Council Fire Officer leaving 200 pupils with accommodation of only two classrooms; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has received no formal notification with regard to the fire damage which it understands has recently occurred to a few classrooms in St. Joseph's Girls' national school, Portumna. The school had an enrolment of 144 in the 1992-93 school year.

Any application by the school authorities for assistance in dealing with any accommodation problem which may have arisen as a result of the fire will be dealt with as a matter of urgency by my Department taking into consideration, however, that a new amalgamated national school which it has already been agreed will be provided in Portumna is at an advanced stage of planning.
