Gay Mitchell

Ceist:

123 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance the amount of money spent by the Government on each referendum in 1992.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 122 and 123 together.

For the Maastricht Referendum the Central Fund Expenditure on the administration of the referendum was £1.930 million. Other publicity-advertising costs incurred by Government Departments amounted to £632,000. Expenditure by European Agencies is not a matter for the Government.

In relation to the November referenda I am not in a position to provide the specific information requested by the Deputy due to the fact that not all the Returning Officer's accounts have been received to date and because of the fact that the referenda and the General Election were held on the same date which makes it difficult to disaggregate the figures into the constituent elements. However, the Deputy may wish to know that the overall amounts issued from the Central Fund in relation to the referenda and General Election was £6.252 million. The publicity-advertising expenditure on the referenda was £310,000.
