Vol. 434 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Expenditure on Conservation.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

98 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the proportion of the overall expenditure by the Office of Public Works in the last financial year which was spent on habitat protection and conservation of species; and the proportion of the budget that was spent on facilities for tourists and visitors.

As works undertaken by the Office of Public Works serve a multiplicity of purposes, it is not possible to segregate the overall expenditure on habitat protection, conservation of species and facilities for tourists-visitors.

Direct expenditure on habitat protection and conservation of species in 1992 was £843,000. This represents approximately 1 per cent of the office's gross expenditure for the year.

Direct expenditure on the provision of visitor facilities last year was £13.8 million. This represents 12 per cent of the Office of Public Works gross expenditure in 1992.
