Vol. 435 No. 1

Written Answers. - THORP Reprocessing Plant.

Thomas P. Broughan

Ceist:

151 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if he has received any response from the British Government to his demand for a public inquiry on Sellafield; and if he will meet with Mr. John Gummer, British Minister for the Environment, to indicate the great anxiety of the Irish people on the possible start-up of the THORP reprocessing plant.

I have not yet received a response from the UK authorities to my call for a public inquiry to be held to deal with all aspects of THORP. The UK authorities will not make a decision on the question of holding a hearing or inquiry until they have considered all submissions received as part of the most recent public consultation.

I have no plans, at present, to request a meeting with the UK Secretary of State for the Environment on this matter.
