Vol. 435 No. 3

Written Answers. - Extension of DART.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

28 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if it is intended to implement the recommendation of the Dublin Transportation Initiative that the DART be extended to Greystones, County Wicklow; if any money has been allocated for this purpose in 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Development Plan which was recently submitted to the European Commission includes provision for an EC assisted investment programme of £220 million which will enable the public transport elements of the Dublin Transportation Initiative Recommended Strategy to be substantially implemented by 1999. This investment programme includes provision for expenditure of up to £200 million on the development of a light rail transit network for Dublin.

A further £20 million has been included in the plan for other public transport projects in Dublin including the development of public transport interchange facilities, integrated ticketing and the upgrading of suburban rail services, including DART. These issues are being examined in detail at present in the context of the Dublin Transportation Initiative and the preparation of the draft operational programme on transport. Decisions have not yet been finalised in relation to the allocation of the proposed expenditure of £20 million to individual transport projects.
