Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

98 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the current plans, if any, he has for the development of a national transport policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 97 and 98 together.

The Government have stated their sectoral objectives and strategy for an integrated transport policy in Chapter 9 of the National Development Plan, 1994-1999. An integrated Operational Programme for Transport is now being drawn-up by the Department of the Environment, the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications and the Department of the Marine. The Operational Programme will detail the development measures to be implemented in the transport sector to meet the objectives set out in the National Development Plan. The Programme will be submitted to the EC Commission shortly and will be published following agreement with the Commission on its contents.

Ceist:

99 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the extent to which he anticipates the development of rail and air transport to be funded by the EC in the next five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In so far as transport investments under the aegis of my Department are concerned, I would refer the Deputy to the following pages of the National Development Plan 1994-1999 which is available in the Library of the House:

Rail: Mainland Rail: Pages 101/102 Dublin Transportation Initiatives: Pages 102/103

Air: State Airports: Pages 103/105 Regional Airports: Pages 105/106.
