Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Interpretative Centres.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

24 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the proposals, if any, he has to locate and/or develop interpretative centres throughout the country in view of anticipated capital in 1994 and works unfinished in 1993; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Liz McManus

Ceist:

51 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the consultation, if any, he has had with the Office of Public Works regarding the outcome of their recent consultation process with the public on the future of the proposed interpretative centres; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 51 together.

Under the next tranche of Structural Funds for 1994-1999 a large programme of works will be undertaken on the conservation and restoration of heritage properties and on the improvement of, access to, and intepretation of, the heritage. No final decisions have yet been taken on the location or development of interpretative centres under this programme.

I have had discussions and correspondence with Mr. Noel Dempsey, TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, regarding his consultations with the public on the future of the proposed interpretative centres at Mullaghmore, Luggala and the Boyne Valley and anticipate further discussions and consultations with him as a matter of course.
