Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dunquin (Kerry) Interpretative Centre.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

59 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Finance the net gain in jobs to local people arising from the opening of the Interpretative Centre at Dunquin, County Kerry.

Twelve people have been directly employed at the centre including the manager, four guides, one general operative and six catering staff.

The construction of the building generated about 70 jobs of which up to 45 were employed directly on site while local enterprises will benefit from the spin off effect of increased numbers of visitors to the area attracted by the centre.
There are plans to increase employment at a future date when the Great Blasket Island National Historic Park is in full operation by recruiting extra guides and up to three park rangers. Local boatmen will also benefit by providing a ferry service to the island for visitors to the centre.
