Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - N84 Road Improvements.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

53 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money allocated to the national secondary route between Headford, County Galway and Shrule, County Mayo in each of the years from 1988 to 1992; if proposals have been finalised for improvement of this roadway; the funds to be allocated during 1994; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Details of maintenance grants for national secondary roads in County Galway and in County Mayo during the period are set out in the following table:

The grants totalled £5.032 million to Galway County Council and £6.383 million to Mayo County Council. The programme of works to be carried out with these grants is primarily a matter for the local authorities concerned and details of the extent to which grants were assigned to the N84 between Headford and Shrule are not available in my Department. A road improvement grant of £80,000 was paid to Galway County Council in 1991 for the provision of hard shoulders on the N84 at Headford.
The planning and development of road improvement projects on national roads is also a matter, in the first instance, for the relevant local authority. No proposals have been submitted to my Department for the improvement of the section of roadway in question. The funds to be provided next year for the maintenance and improvement of national secondary roads have yet to be determined.
