Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - National Education Convention.

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

108 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education the reason the Secondary School Council of Governors, which represents 21 Protestant secondary schools in this country, were not invited to participate in the recent National Education Convention.

I want to make it clear, at the outset, that a number of organisations representing the Protestant education sector were invited to participate in the National Education Convention. These organisations were the Secondary Education Committee, the Church of Ireland Board of Education and the Irish Schoolmasters' Association.

The organisations attended and participated actively in the work of the Convention.

My intention when inviting these organisations was to provide full representation for this important educational sector.

In light of the views expressed by the Secondary School Council of Governors, my Department is taking steps to further clarify the representational needs of the Protestant education sector.
