Vol. 435 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Written Answers. - Local Authority Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

16 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment the allocation of funds to local authorities throughout the country from the regional funds for the repair of county roads and Class 3 lanes; the amount per year; the way in which the allocation will be made to each local authority; if it will be made on the basis of the number of miles per county road, per county, on the population basis or on the condition of the roadway; when the first allocation will be made; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

EC assistance is not available for road repairs or other road maintenance works. It is a matter for local authorities to finance such works on county and other non-national roads from their own resources, supplemented by the discretionary block grants for maintenance provided annually by my Department.

The National Development Plan provides for investment of £475 million in the period 1994-99 on the improvement of non-national roads and indicates broadly how the EC co-financed element of this will be administered.
