Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hare Killings.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

148 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of muzzled trial courses held by the Irish Coursing Club in 1993 to date; the number of hares killed at these events; and the manner in which the hares were killed, as between injured and put down or killed outright.

Provisional figures for the year 1993, up to and including 14 November, show that there were 671 muzzled trial courses held. Two hares were killed outright and 5 were injured and had to be put down.

Ceist:

149 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if, in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 190 on 16 November 1993, it was a vet from his Department who recommended that the hare be put down; if the vet examined the hare; and the reason the vet's recommendation was not followed by the Irish Coursing Club.

The meeting in question was monitored by a veterinary inspector. He did not examine the hare but it appeared to him from a distance that the hare may have been injured. The ICC has stated that, on examination, it found that the hare was not injured.
