Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Proposed National Convention Centre.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

57 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Taoiseach if the Phoenix Park Racecourse site is being considered as a location for the proposed National Convention Centre; his views on whether, in respect of national institutions, there is a heavy imbalance favouring the south-east corner of Dublin and on whether a strong case exists for locating the proposed Convention Centre in north or west Dublin in view of its potential to be a generator of further development, growth and jobs; if the Phoenix Park Racecourse, being north and west of the city centre would be an ideal location; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to my replies to Questions No. 6 of 2 March 1993 and No. 2 of 27 October 1993, when I outlined developments in relation to the proposals from the Royal Dublin Society for the development of the National Convention Centre at their site in Ballsbridge.

In relation to the Phoenix Park Racecourse site, I can confirm that a separate group is preparing a proposal to develop, there, a 65,000 all-seater flagship national stadium and an adjacent 15,000 seater, covered, complementary arena — together with a hotel-conference centre and related commercial elements.

The Government very much welcomes private investment in the tourism infrastructure, and is willing to co-operate on proposals leading to the best and most effective economic returns for the whole country.
