Vol. 436 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waste Statistics.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

161 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details, in tabular form, of the waste generated per capita in each of the years 1983 to 1992; and the tonnage of waste collected and disposed of by local authorities for each of these years.

Wexford): The 1986 National Database on Waste (a copy of which is available in the Oireachtas Library) gives a detailed breakdown in Table VI — 1 (page 18) of totals of waste collected and disposed of by local authorities. Excluding sewage sludge, the estimate of annual total waste collected/disposed of by local authorities is some 1.1 million tonnes.

Updated estimates contained in the study "Towards a Recycling Strategy for Ireland" published in March 1993 (a copy of which was sent to each Deputy and is also available in the Library) show an annual total for household waste of some 1.22 million tonnes. On this latter basis, 346 kg per capita of domestic waste are now generated annually in Ireland.
