Ceist:37 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the plans, if any, the Government has to introduce the job subsidy scheme promised in the Programme for a Partnership Government 1993-1997.

As I have previously indicated to the House, the proposals outlined in the Programme for Government are objectives to be achieved over the period 1993-97, having regard to the availability of resources.
I have not yet developed proposals for a new wage subsidy scheme. In the meantime, however, FÁS will administer the employment incentive scheme — EIS — which is aimed at encouraging the recruitment of additional employees from among long term unemployed persons, early school leavers and other disadvantaged persons. Subject to the conditions of this scheme, a subsidy of £60 or £45 per week, depending on the category of employee recruited, is paid for 39 weeks.
