Seán Barrett

Ceist:

93 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Defence if he will ensure that any member of the Defence Forces who is selected to represent the Irish Defence forces in international competitions abroad or at home will have all expenses paid.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 16 and 93 together.

I am satisfied that members of the Defence Forces who are selected to represent the Forces in international competitions are paid all their reasonable expenses. Members involved in international competitions do so under the auspices of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM). The State pays the travel costs incurred by participants. In addition, as well as normal remuneration, a per diem allowance of US $15 is paid to each participant. The host country is obliged to supply accommodation and meals.

In 1993, a total of 66 participants represented the Defence Forces as follows:-

Pentathlon in Denmark

9 participants

Shooting competition in Norway

15 participants

Orienteering in Hungary

8 participants

Soccer in France

18 participants

Cross Country in Holland

14 participants

Track & Field in France
