Vol. 436 No. 6

Written Answers. - Fishing Ban on Pelagic Species.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

68 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine if he proposes to impose a ban on fishing of pelagic species off the Mayo coastline; if so the reason for this decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans to impose a ban on fishing of pelagic species off the Mayo coastline. Present restrictions regarding pelagic fishing contained in Sea Fishing Boat Licences prohibit most vessels from fishing within six miles of the coast and all vessels from within three miles.

Some years ago there were problems associated with the interaction of herring fishing with local lobster fishermen where in some instances static gear was damaged. In 1991, however, following a number of meetings arranged by the Department, the parties involved agreed to a voluntary code of practice and to a system for the assessment and payment of compensation where loss of gear occured. The agreed arrangements appear to have worked well over the past number of years.
