Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Bus Fire.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

220 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to an incident whereby a school bus was destroyed by fire while carrying children to Ballyhale national school, County Kilkenny; if she will have an inquiry carried out into this particular incident with a view to ensuring the safety of the school transport service; if the findings of the inquiry into this particular fire incident will be made public; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the incident to which the Deputy refers, and am glad to be able to tell the House that nobody was injured. The cause of the fire is being investigated jointly by the district manager and the chief mechanical engineer of Bus Éireann, my Department's agents in the operation of the school transport scheme, and the local inspector of public service vehicles, who is a member of the Garda Síochána. When I receive the report, I will let the Deputy know the outcome.
