Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Intervention Storage Costs.

Proinsias De Rossa

Ceist:

70 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total cost of the storage of intervention products for each of the past five years; the plans, if any, he has to reduce the cost of such storage; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I will present the answer to the first part of this question in a tabular statement which I propose to have circulated in the Official Report. The cost figures include VAT which is not eligible for recoupment from the European Union.

In relation to the level of storage charges, I would point out that rates are negotiated on a commercial basis with the storage companies. Every effort is made to keep the agreed rates as keen as possible and, at present, Irish rates are in the mid range of those that apply in European Union member states.

Note: Receipts and costs are not directly comparable because of the time lag in recoupment from FEOGA.
