Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Traffic Law Enforcement.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

116 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if she will make a statement in relation to the adequacy in general of traffic law enforcement.

Traffic law enforcement has become a top priority in recent years for the gardaí who now employ the most modern technology available to detect serious road traffic infringements, such as speeding, dangerous and careless driving and defective vehicles. The welcome change in social attitudes with respect to drunken driving is a direct result of intensified Garda enforcement of the road traffic laws. The most recently published Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime (for the year ended 31 December, 1992) clearly shows that there is a strict and sustained level of traffic law enforcement and I am assured by the Garda authorities that this will continue.

For my part, I intend to see to it that the gardaí continue to have the necessary resources, in personnel and equipment, to carry on with this essential and vital task.
