Vol. 436 No. 7

Written Answers. - Carrickmines (Dublin) Drainage Scheme.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

134 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment if, following the letter he sent to Dublin County Council advising them that he is prepared to sanction only 40 per cent of the cost of the Carrickmines main drainage scheme, he will reconsider his decision in view of the fact that Dublin County Council does not have the resources to pay for the balance of the cost of this drainage scheme, and also because the lands to be serviced include lands for local authority housing and lands for major industrial development as well as lands for private housing.

I have recently agreed to provide grant assistance for the Carrickmines scheme because of its urgency in terms of facilitating development and job creation.

I have notified Dublin County Council that the level of grant in this case should be limited to 40 per cent because of the likely ineligibility of the scheme for EC co-financing, the significant development levies and special contributions already received by Dublin County Council or in prospect, in relation to development which the scheme will benefit, and the need to optimise the coverage and the benefits of the water and sanitary services programme throughout all local authority areas.

It is now a matter for Dublin County Council to progress the scheme on this basis.
