Vol. 437 No. 2

Written Answers. - Galway County Enterprise Development Board.

Robert Molloy

Ceist:

83 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the position in relation to the future of the County Enterprise Development Board in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In September 1993, following the Government's approval of the establishment of county enterprise boards on a different basis from that which was originally outlined by the then Government in October 1992, I confirmed that the mandate of the Galway County and City Enterprise Board would be extended until 31 December 1993.

I have been considering how the delivery of the range of services associated with the mix of elements in the Local Development Programme might be integrated so as to ensure the development of an effective programme which will command the confidence and support of local communities. The recent report of the National Economic and Social Forum has highlighted the importance of achieving a balanced, integrated approach to the work of county enterprise boards, other community-based efforts to combat long term unemployment in disadvantaged areas and the economic development role of the local authorities.

I propose to extend the mandate of the current Galway County and City Enterprise Board and to keep under review the arrangements for its effective co-ordination with mainstream national programmes and complementary local partnership structures.
