Vol. 437 No. 4

Written Answers. - Storm Damage Compensation.

Ceist:

126 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry when an application for assistance for damages owing to storm conditions in May 1993, was received, through Teagasc, by his Department from persons (details supplied) in County Wexford; the progress to date; the likely outcome of this application; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, on Wednesday night, 8 December 1993, further extensive damage was done to this business by bad weather; the reason for the delay in dealing with the original application; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The persons named were visited by a Teagasc adviser on 5 August as part of a survey to assess the losses suffered by the horticulture industry due to abnormal weather conditions last May. This survey was carried out by Teagasc at the request of the IFA and was done without any commitment by me to provide assistance. On 12 November 1993 I announced that I had established a fund of £1 million out of which assistance will be granted to horticulture and potato growers who suffered major or total crop losses. The details of the scheme, including the form of application for assistance, are currently being discussed with Teagasc and will be announced as soon as those discussions have concluded.

I am aware that some people in the horticulture industry have been adversely affected by the severe weather of the 8-9 December. However there are no funds available to my Department out of which assistance could be provided.
