Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Classification.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

562 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will approve the classification of the Presentation Secondary School, Waterford, as disadvantaged in view of the ongoing difficulties being experienced in the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department allocated an additional 60 teachers in each of the school years 1990/91 and 1991/92 under a scheme of assistance to post-primary schools in disadvantaged areas.

The posts were allocated on the basis of agreed criteria drawn up by a working party representative of school authorities, teacher unions, parents' interests and my Department.

This school did not qualify for the allocation of one of those posts.

The resources to be targeted on disadvantaged areas and groups and the criteria for distributing such resources are kept under constant review. The Presentation Secondary School, Waterford will be considered in any extension of the current arrangements.
