Ceist:

598 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education the amount of money paid by her Department towards developing a primary school library service for each of the years from 1980 to 1983 and from 1990 to 1993.

My Department provides a grant to local authorities for the provision of a library service for primary schools.

The grant paid in respect of all primary school pupils in each local authority area, and supplemented by other funds at the disposal of the Chief Librarian, is used to buy books for lending or distribution to schools.

The amount paid for the years 1980-1983 and 1990-1993 was as follows:

Ceist:

599 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools that received grants for the development of audio visual facilities for each year since 1990; and the total amount of money paid for this purpose for each of the years.

In the ordinary course, the purchase of audio-visual aids forms a charge on general school operational costs.

Prior to 1992 an allocation was provided to operate a scheme of grants to assist schools specifically in the purchase of audio visual aids and also to provide filmstrips and tapes as aids in the teaching of Irish.
In both 1990 and 1991 the full allocation of £70,000 was used to purchase filmstrips for the "Cursaí Comhrá Gaeilge Series" in response to the significant demand from schools for them. Consequently, in those years no specific grants were paid to assist in the development of audio visual facilities.
