Vol. 438 No. 1

Written Answers. - Harbour Authorities Members' Allowances.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

87 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for the Marine if he will resolve the apparent anomaly that exists for members of harbour boards that live within five miles of the harbour office and who are not eligible for travelling and subsistence allowance for attending meetings under the Harbours Act, 1947; and if he will amend the Harbours Act, 1947, to include representation on harbour authorities under the terms for travelling and subsistence.

It is not my intention to introduce legislation to amend the regulations governing the payment of expenses to members of harbour authorities as set out under the Harbours Act, 1947.

As the Deputy will no doubt be aware, legislation to implement the key recommendations of the Commercial Harbours Review Group is being prepared at present. In the event of this legislation being passed, the arrangements for payment of expenses would become a matter for the new Boards.
