Vol. 438 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Maintenance Block Grants.

Avril Doyle

Ceist:

72 Mrs. Doyle asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give, in tabular form by county, the moneys provided for maintenance of non-national roads for the last ten years; the number of kilometres of non-national roads in each county; and the amount per kilometre each county received each year.

I refer to the reply to Question No. 134 of 14 May 1991 which sets out details of the block grants allocated to county councils for the maintenance of regional and county roads and the amounts per kilometre which the grants represent in each case for the years 1989 to 1991.

As indicated in that reply, grants were not allocated specifically for the maintenance of regional and county roads prior to 1989. The system of grants then in operation involved the allocation of a single block grant to each county council, which supplemented local authorities' own resources for the improvement and maintenance of regional roads and for the improvement of county roads. The grants could not be applied to the maintenance of county roads.
Information on block grants paid to local authorities before 1989 is contained in the reply to Question No. 173 of 12 February 1991.
The system of grants operated in the case of urban authorities involves the allocation of a single block grant to supplement the authorities' own resources for the improvement and maintenance of urban roads. It is a matter for each authority to determine the proportion of funds used for improvement and maintenance works.
Information in respect of maintenance grants paid to county councils in 1992 and 1993 is set out in the following table.
