Vol. 438 No. 3

Written Answers. - Prison Statistics.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

20 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice if she has any information on the total number of Irish nationals serving prison sentences in countries that have ratified the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons, and the number of persons from such countries who are serving sentences in Irish prisons.

The figure for Irish nationals serving prison sentences in countries that have ratified the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons is, as far as we are aware, 445.

The above figure refers to persons in custody on 31 January 1994. There may, of course, be other persons serving sentences in these countries not included in this figure because they did not request that our embassy be notified of their arrest, or they have dual citizenship and were not travelling on their Irish passports.

The number of persons from countries that have ratified the convention serving sentences in Irish prisons is 96.
