Written Answers. - Acid Rain Problems.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

143 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any, he has in relation to the reduction of the acid rain problem.

Wexford): National and international research indicates a relatively low level of acid precipitation in Ireland, with correspondingly limited environmental impact.

A range of measures is nonetheless being applied to minimise acid deposition in Ireland, including controls on sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from road traffic, licensing of industrial plant emissions, limits on the sulphur content of gas oil and certain solid fuels, and promotion of natural gas use. National sulphur emissions, in particular, have reduced considerably as a result of these measures and now stand at over 25 per cent less than 1980 levels.
