Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Tuberculosis.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

173 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of cattle that failed the TB tests in 1993; the total subvention paid to farmers when their cattle were sent to the factory; and the percentage of cattle confirmed as TB cases after factory tests.

The number of reactor animals identified following a TB test in 1993 was 30,359. The total payment to herdowners by way of TB reactor grants, depopulation grants and income supplement in 1993 amounted to £9.81 million. The percentage of TB reactor animals in which visible lesions were evident at post mortem was 34.9 per cent. Small non-visible lesions would not be evident at post mortem. The presence or absence of disease is determined by the tuberculin test.
