Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Beef Tribunal.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

55 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the total cost of the beef tribunal to date; if he will give details of all payments; if he will advise of all personnel involved in the tribunal and the services they are providing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Total expenditure by my Department including withholding tax up to the end of December 1993 in connection with the beef tribunal was £7.18 million approximately. I propose to circulate a table giving a breakdown of payments in the official report.

Apart from the sole member of the tribunal, the following personnel are currently engaged on work related to the completion of the report of the tribunal:

(1) A senior counsel at the request of the sole member of the tribunal to summarise and correlate the vast quantity of evidence oral and documentary adduced before the tribunal.

(2) A senior assistant solicitor, a legal staff officer, a registrar, three clerical assistants and a court crier-tip-staff to assist in the preparation of the report.

Beef Tribunal 1991-1992-1993.
