Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Forestry Development.

John Browne

Ceist:

61 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the names of the species and hybrids of trees allowed for grant purposes; and, if these are different to those in Northern Ireland where the soils are similar, he will give the reasons for the difference.

I am circulating in the Official Report a list of the species which are accepted by my Department for grant-aid under forestry development. The species listed are those which my Department regards as economically viable and most suitable for growing on soils within the State. The species on this list differ in some respects from those acceptable for grant-aid in Northern Ireland. This is because the Northern Irish authorities use those generally acceptable in the UK.

My Department's list is constantly under review and is amended from time to time as circumstances demand.
