Vol. 439 No. 5

Written Answers. - Inservice Training.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

226 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the programme of in-service training for each teacher at post-primary level in relation to the introduction of junior certificate, the introduction of senior certificate and the transition year.

Since the introduction of the junior certificate in 1989, there has been an on-going programme of in-career development for teachers with further courses being organised on a regional basis for 7 and 8 March 1994.

In the case of transition year, I have arranged for an in-career development programme to be delivered at regional level by a team of experienced teachers who have been trained specifically for the task. The programme involves briefing the whole staff of schools offering transition year and includes two days of in-career development at local level for groups of 4/5 teachers from each school.
With regard to changes in the senior cycle including the restructured leaving certificate vocational programme, the new leaving certificate applied programme and revised syllabuses, I propose to put in place a comprehensive training programme of in-career development for the teachers involved.
