Vol. 439 No. 7

Written Answers. - Designated Areas.

Ivan Yates

Ceist:

69 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment when he will make the necessary order designating the areas for urban renewal in the new towns to be given urban renewal designation as outlined in the 1994 budget; if this will be done on the basis of proposals submitted by local authorities to his Department; the procedure which will be followed in the designation of such areas within these towns; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The areas to be designated under the new urban renewal scheme will be selected having regard to factors such as extent of urban decay, the need for renewal, the location and general character of the area, the potential for redevelopment, the need to promote residential accommodation and the historical or architectural significance of the area. Consultations will take place with the local authorities concerned and this will be supplemented by consideration of the relevant development plans, inspection of the area by officials of my Department and consideration of submissions made by interested groups. The necessary order or orders formally designating areas under section 6 of the Urban Renewal Act, 1986, will be made as soon as possible.
