Vol. 440 No. 7

Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

In accordance with Standing Order 30 I wish to advise you, Sir, that at the commencement of public business today I intend to request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest, the imminent closure of the sale of the Aer Lingus Subsidiary SRS, at Shannon, and the need for the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications to intervene having regard to the serious questions that surround the suitability of the prospective purchaser, including questions raised in the US report of the National Transportation Safety Body and the implications for the reputation and jobs at Shannon.

Having considered the matter carefully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I do not wish to dispute your ruling, but your office has just disallowed me an Adjournment debate on this matter. The sale is to be concluded this weekend.

The matter is not within the current responsibility of the Government, being primarily one for Aer Lingus.

The Minister does have a role and the closure is due this weekend.

I now call on Deputy Paul Connaughton to state the matter of which he has given notice.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to debate the current campaign being carried out by the Revenue Commissioners into the affairs of livestock marts nationwide, to ascertain the reasons for such a campaign, to seek information concerning the uses made by the Revenue Commissioners of the information collected on individual buyers and sellers of livestock and to seek information as to whether such a campaign will be extended to creameries and meat processing factories.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

Is it possible for the Minister for Finance or the Taoiseach to let me know who controls the Revenue Commissioners?

Deputy Connaughton has many other ways and means of raising this matter.

This is happening today, a Cheann Comhairle.

The Deputy must not persist now.

This is happening today and the entire agricultural community are extremely worried about it. I want to know who gave the order.

The Deputy may not pursue it now.

The smile might be on the other side of the Minister's face in Kildare.

They are used to paying tax in Kildare.
