Written Answers. - Vehicle Maximum Passenger Capacity.

123 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice if she will review the situation regarding the maximum number of passengers that particular vehicles may be licensed to carry in view of representations received (details supplied); if she will have arrangements made for senior officials of her Department to meet with a deputation to discuss the concerns of vehicle operators in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As stated in my reply to the Deputy's earlier representations, the Garda authorities, who have responsibility for this matter, have decided in the interests of public safety and consistency to set out the maximum number of passengers that particular vehicles may be licensed to carry. In doing so, the Garda Commissioner has acted within his statutory powers and, as Minister for Justice, I have no function in the matter.
