Vol. 441 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Harney. I call on Deputy Harney to state the matter about which she has given notice.

I wish to seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss an important matter, namely, conflicting statements by the Taoiseach and Government Ministers in relation to the Governments's fundamental taxation strategy and its future plans for the residential property tax and service charges.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contempleted by the Standing Order and, accordingly, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

Deputies opposite can breathe a sigh of relief.

With respect, I suggest this matter is urgent because we are about to debate the Finance Bill. Before we can apply our minds to the Government's taxation strategy we need to know what it is. Therefore, it is important to discuss this matter.

This matter has been ruled upon and the Deputy must find another way to raise it.

What other way does the Chair suggest I should raise it?

We will be embarking upon the Second Stage of the Finance Bill shortly.

This matter was raised this morning, the Taoiseach spoke about another on Saturday and do we know what is happening? The Minister is not present. I am disappointed the Chair did not allow my motion.

We know that. I am sure Deputy Harney will be interested to know that the Government's bottom line is that it will be reducing the burden of taxation and not increasing it as she would like to believe.

Except for householders?

(Interruptions.)
