51 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that working conditions in Leinster House are up to standard; and if not the alterations that are planned to improve the situation.
The standard of accommodation within Leinster House has significantly improved over the past 18 months. Among the works carried out last summer were the air-conditioning of the Dáil Chamber, the upgrading of toilet and shower facilities, refurbishment of the Members' restaurant and Cabinet dining room and the replacement of carpets on the ground floor.
A further programme of improvements is currently being planned for the next summer recess. This includes the first phase of refurbishing the office block, further improvements to the restaurant and bars, and replacement of carpets on the stairs and first floor.
I am pleased to be able to tell the Deputy that following an initiative taken by me, the Government has now approved a major development of new accommodation for Leinster House. I am circulating today a brochure which gives an outline of the development proposed by me and approved by the Government. The outline in the brochure will be the subject of widespread consultations with staff, Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas and with other users of Leinster House.
