Ceist:

64 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants employed in his Department; and the number who have worked in the business or commercial sphere before ending or starting their period of employment in the public service.

The total number of civil servants employed in my Department is 524.5 on 1 April 1994.

The total number of civil servants employed in the offices under my aegis as on 1 April 1994 are as follows:

State Laboratory	73
Revenue Commissioners	5,974.5
Valuation Office	154.5
Ordnance Survey	284
Ombudsman's Office	31

The information sought by the Deputy in relation to previous business or commercial experience is not kept on record. I do not believe that the costs involved in ascertaining this information are justified in view of the inordinate amount of time and effort that would be required.
